Galaxy projector room setup: placement, distance and ambient light

Almost every disappointing galaxy projector is a well-made projector in the wrong place. Three things decide how it looks — where it stands, what it is pointed at, and how much other light is in the room — and all three are free to change. This is how to work through them in about ten minutes.
What you need
- A galaxy projector
- A stable shelf or table roughly two metres from the surface
- A curtain or blind that blocks street light
Step by step
- Pick the surface. Choose the flattest, palest, least textured ceiling or wall in the room. A wall is a better target than a textured ceiling.
- Darken the room. Close the door, draw the curtains and cover or switch off standby LEDs. Remove any light shining directly onto the projection surface.
- Place it about two metres away. Stand the projector on a stable, level surface roughly two metres from your target and aim the centre of the beam where you want the middle of the scene.
- Look from where you will lie. Lie down in the position you will actually use and check the framing from there, not from the doorway.
- Move it and compare. Try half a metre closer and half a metre further, and pick the one that looks best. Closer and brighter usually wins over larger and fainter.
Start with the surface, not the projector
Look at the ceiling or wall you intend to use before you decide where the projector goes. A flat, matte, light-coloured surface is what you want. Projected light is diffuse to begin with, and a textured surface scatters it again — artex, woodchip and heavy plaster swirls all turn crisp points into a general glow.
Colour matters less than texture but it still matters. White and off-white ceilings return the most light; a dark or strongly coloured wall absorbs a great deal of it and the whole scene reads dimmer. If your ceiling is textured and your walls are not, point it at a wall — there is no rule that says a galaxy projector has to go upwards.
Distance and angle
The further from the surface, the larger and dimmer the projection; the closer, the smaller and brighter. There is no single correct distance because it depends on your ceiling height and how much of it you want covered, so treat it as something to tune rather than to get right first time.
Start with the projector on a shelf or bedside table about two metres from the surface, angled so the centre of the beam lands where you want the middle of the scene. Move it half a metre closer and half a metre further and look at both before settling. Most people end up closer than they first guess, because a smaller, brighter field looks better than a large faint one.
What to stand it on
A stable, level surface at roughly the right height beats anything improvised. A projector that is nudged every time someone walks past will need re-aiming constantly, and the angle is the fiddliest part of the setup.
A shelf, a chest of drawers or a bedside table all work. The floor works too and gives the widest ceiling coverage, but it puts the unit where it will be kicked. If you use the floor, put it in a corner rather than in the middle of the room.
How dark the room needs to be
Darker is always better, and there is no threshold — every source of light you remove makes the projection stronger. But you do not need a blackout: the practical target is no light source in the room brighter than the projection itself, and nothing shining directly onto the surface you are projecting onto.
The usual culprits are a streetlight through thin curtains, a hallway light through an open door, and the standby LEDs on a television. Deal with those three and most rooms are dark enough. A closed door and a lined curtain make more difference than anything you can change about the projector.
A ten-minute tuning pass
Set it up, turn everything else off, and lie down where you will actually be lying. That is the only viewpoint that matters, and it is not the same as standing in the doorway looking up. Scenes that look well-centred from the door are often half on the wall from the bed.
Then change one thing at a time: move it closer, re-aim it, try the wall instead of the ceiling. Ten minutes of that gets you a setup you keep, and it costs nothing.
Rooms that are hard work
Very high ceilings spread the light too far to look dense. If you have a stairwell-height ceiling, project onto a wall instead. Glossy or mirrored surfaces reflect rather than diffuse and give you a bright hot spot with nothing around it.
Rooms with a lot of pale, hard furniture bounce light around and lift the general brightness, which flattens the contrast. Soft furnishings absorb it. This is why the same projector nearly always looks better in a bedroom than in a kitchen.
